TREX logo

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX) is a government sponsored educational initiative designed to highlight Alberta art and artists through fully developed curatorial exhibitions for use in schools, libraries, health care centres and smaller rural institutions and galleries. The mandate is to provide all Albertans with the opportunity to enjoy visual art exhibitions in their communities.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) has supported a provincial travelling exhibition program since 1981. There are currently three regional galleries and one arts organization contracted to manage TREX for the AFA.

The Prairie Art Gallery, Grande Prairie
Region 1 - Northwest Alberta

The Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton
Region 2 - Northeast and North Central Alberta

The Alberta Society of Artists, Calgary
Region 3 - Southwest Alberta

The Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, Medicine Hat
Region 4 - Southeast Alberta

The TREX Program assists in making the AFA extensive art collection available to Albertans. This growing art collection consists of over 8,000 artworks showcasing the creative talents of more than 1,700 artists.

The Alberta Society of Artists (ASA) has a long history of producing and promoting local, regional and interprovincial travelling exhibitions. The Society is currently contracted by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts to develop and circulate art exhibitions to venues throughout southwest Alberta (map). Each exhibition is designed to easily unpack, install and commerically transport. Educational interpretative guides are provided that enable teachers to use the exhibitions in many different ways within the school curriculum. Each year we welcome new communities and venues to experience eye-opening and enriching art through the TREX Program.

The TREX Program continues to offer affordable exhibition experiences. Exhibition fees are $75.00 per booking. Shipping and artwork insurance costs are covered by the TREX Program.

The ASA advertises the TREX Program through print media. Broad Strokes is  a newsletter published three times a year by the ASA to promote greater awareness of the TREX Program.

The southwest region of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program is managed through the Calgary office of the ASA located on the third floor of the Crossroads Market at 1235 26th Avenue SE.
