Juror's Comments
On jurying the Alberta Society of Artists' entries for Triple
Take: Past, Present and Future at the Muttart Public Art Gallery we
discovered two different, yet related directions with the selected
work.
The North Gallery presents the future through celebratory,
heraldic glittering works by Colleen Anderson Millard's triptych
Window of Time Past: Continents Drifting, Window of Time Present:
The Celebration of Being, Window of Future Time: Knowing The
Universe and the 3-D sculpture by Pat Strakowski Eclectic
Visionary. The works by Simon Wong Spirit of The Universe and
Sharon Williams Creation: The Birth of An Idea create a view of
positive optimism through the gestural process applied to the
surface. As we approach the dawning of the new millenium, we all
need to Take Five: From Sinners to Saints by Andie Wicherts.
The South Gallery is a celebration through works inspired by the
landscape and the human form. Passing seasons and passing time are
defined by shifting light and colour in the triptych by Lynn Malin.
The winter canvas by Bill Duma Cityscape #5 freezes time cold in
its tracks while the work by Lap Lam New Dawn #1 creates a warm
glow through a new day. The sun is nature's time piece shaping our
perception of space as presented in the works by Pam Wilman
Whaleback Vista and Lois Bauman Remembering Calgary's Natural Parks
.
These two different directions in the art of the Alberta Society
of the Arts members are related. They reflect the very genesis of
the Alberta Society of the Arts in 1931, the healthy nature of
Alberta's art and the all embracing mandate of the exhibition
program of the Muttart Public Art Gallery as it leaves its
historical home for new challenges at its new downtown Stephen
Avenue site.
