In every human being there is some saint and some sinner. For
centuries artists have depicted through their work individuals who
manifest the extremes of the continuum from virtuous goddess to the
despoiling satyr, from the martyred saint to the bloodthirsty
despot. In today's society these distinctions tend to be less black
and white but we all know individuals both famous, infamous and
unknown who embody one of these personalities.
Members of the Alberta Society of Artists explore this
contradiction through their work in a wide variety of media and
styles. Each artist or artists' collaboration was asked to address
both saint and sinner either in one work or in separate works.
The Alberta Society of Artists is the oldest professional
artist's
organization in Alberta promoting the visual arts since 1931. The
organization represents nearly two hundred artists across the
province and is proud to have participated in every Works Festival
since the inception.
