Wes F. Irwin
(1897-1976)
A Charter Member of the Alberta Society of Artists, Wes Irwin was
one of the major builders of the Society and was awarded a Life
Membership. He was the second President of the Society, following
A. C. Leighton in 1948-49 and edited the Highlights from 1950-52,
but his major contribution was writing A Brief History of the
Alberta Society of Artists in 1974. He was also President of the
Calgary Allied Arts Council.
Born in Los Angeles, Irwin grew up in Lacombe, Alberta. He
received his B.A. from the University of Alberta and his M.A. from
Columbia University. He spent a year at the Chicago Institute
before becoming an art teacher at Western Canada High School in
1934.
Irwin's paintings were bold and impressionistic. As well as
painting and drawing, Irwin experienced set design, cartooning and
illustration. His work is included in the collection of the Alberta
Foundation for the Arts and the Calgary Civic Art Collection.
