Mary Parris
(1914-?)
Mary Parris' expressive watercolors and acrylic paintings
distinguished her as one of the premiere artists from Edmonton.
Describing her work, Parries stated, "I paint really intuitively.
They're not entirely abstract, they have a basis. I'm sure they are
all related to the weeds, the things on the ground. At least that's
what they remind me of. The term abstract art is rather hazy
anyway; you can only paint concrete things. They are concrete for
you." Her painting, "Weeds and Things", included in the Alberta
Society of Artists Winter Open show 1963, was described as "a
polished elegant composition of yellows, blues and black."
Parries began painting with the Edmonton Sketch Club while still
in her teens. Her art education included courses through the
University of Alberta Extension Program, the Banff School of Fine
Arts and workshops at Jasper and Emma Lake, Saskatchewan.
Mary Parries was a member of the Canadian society of Painters in
Water Color, Focus Gallery, and the Alberta Society of Artists. She
participated in many group and solos shows around the province,
including a solo show at the Edmonton Art Gallery in 1962. Her work
