Jim Nicoll
(1892 - 1986)
Born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Jim met Marion through the Calgary
Sketch Club and married her in 1940. Jim was a trained Civil
Engineer at the University of Alberta, where he took BA and BSc
degrees in 1922 and 1924. A poet and writer of occasional prose for
much of his life, he began to paint in 1930. In 1925 he became a
member of the Senate of the University of Alberta, Edmonton.
His extensive knowledge of colour theory became manifest and at
one period he employed this skill in utilizing the pointillism
technique of the French Impressionists. His control of colour and
form extends through decades of portraits and drawings of Marion.
Works in ink, pastel and oil include "Marion in the Studio," 1936,
"Marion on the Staircase" and "Marion" - a masterpiece in
pastel.
Jim was the founding Editor of Highlights and became President
of the Alberta Society of Artists in 1943. In the 1950's he worked
with the Allied Arts Centre as chairman of the visual arts
committee.
