James Dichmont was a fine water colourist who taught at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art, Calgary (later the Alberta College of Art)from 1932-35 and from 1944-48, as well as being on the staff of the Banff School of Fine Arts.

A charter member of the Alberta Society of Artists, he became a Council Member at the first annual meeting of the society in February, 1932.
